Akshaya Tritiya

The festival of Akshaya Tritiya (Vaishakha Shukla Trtiya) falls on May, 16 this year. It is considered to be the most auspicious day of the Hindu calendar. It is believed, any meaningful activity started on this day would be fruitful. It is also known as “Akha Teej”.

Traditionally, it is the birthday of Lord Parshurama, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. People conduct special Pujas on this day. They bathe in Holy rivers and make charities. They perform Yajya (fire sacrifices. They do special Pujas to Lord Ganesh and goddess Luxmi.

The word “Akshay” means imperishable or eternal, meaning that which never diminishes. Initiations made or valuables bought on this day are considered to bring success and good fortune. Buying gold is a popular activity on Akshaya Tritiya, as it is the ultimate symbol of wealth and properity. People celebrate weddings, begin new ventures, and even plan long journeys on this day.
